Effective Eczema Treatment
About Eczema
Eczema is sometimes called atopic dermatitis, which is the most common form. “Atopic” refers to an allergy. People with eczema often have allergies or asthma along with itchy, red skin. Atopic dermatitis usually develops in early childhood and is more common in people who have a family history of the condition. Atopic dermatitis is long lasting (chronic) and tends to flare periodically.
There are also some common symptoms for all types of eczema:
- Dry, cracked, scaly, thickened skin
- Rash that typically appears on the arms and behind the knees, but can also appear anywhere.
- Raw, sensitive swollen skin from scratching
- Itching, which may be intense especially at night
Healthy skin helps retain moisture and protects you from bacteria, irritants and allergens. Eczema is related to a gene variation that affects the skin's ability to provide this protection. This allows your skin to be affected by environmental factors, irritants and allergens.
Treatment includes avoiding harsh soaps and other irritants.
Certain creams or ointments may also provide relief from the inflammation and itching.
